Aloha HLYC’ers!

Many believe summer is over after July 4th. Personally, I believe it has just begun! This is Jennifer Allen writing you from the basement of our home on the Garrard County side of the Lake. I was ‘installed’ ; ) as the new Secretary during the Officer’s Installation on June 12th along with Joe Holleran as Commodore, Todd Strassburg as Vice Commodore, Trey Willmott as Rear Commodore, Jim Hughey as Governor, and Sharon Haddix as Treasurer. Angela Cobb thankfully remains our Fleet Captain.

Gigi Bailey went ‘OFF DUTY’ last month as Secretary. I wanted to thank her for all her years of dedication to the role of Secretary and only hope I can do half as well. She has been very helpful in my transition into this role but if I inadvertently forget anything or anyone – only I am to blame.

Thing is … I wasn’t really sure what I was getting in to being ‘volunteered’ and all to be Secretary so I had to do some research. When I was informed I would be writing ‘Scuttlebutt’ I had to see what that entailed:

Scuttlebutt in slang usage means rumor or gossip, deriving from the nautical term for the cask used to serve water (or, later, a water fountain). The term corresponds to the iconic colloquial concept of a water cooler office setting, which at times becomes the locus of congregation and casual discussion. Water for immediate consumption on a sailing ship conventionally stored in a scuttled butt: A butt (cask) which had been scuttled by making a hole in it so the water could be withdrawn. Since sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became Navy slang for gossip or rumors.

Well, we all know there isn’t a lot of water consumed at the Yacht Club so I was wondering if I should make up some gossip? I suggested as much, even had some good, colorful ideas but was shot down. So, for now, this news rag will be based on what I know to be true. Granted – it may have be a somewhat hazy, buzzed based truth but unless you all call me on it – it will go uncontested.
